The story of Atlantis may well be Plato’s most famous “serviceable lie,” though many people who have heard the story are unaware of its connection to the Athenian philosopher. Much has been said about Atlantis and the Atlanteans down through the centuries; but, so far as we know, the ancient world’s only explicit account of the place and its people appear in Plato’s Timaeus and Critias dialogues.
